Slinger/Signaller

Course objectives

  • Identify & explain relevant information relating to lifting accessories and match to certification.
  • Ensure that the area of operation is suitable for lifting activities.
  • Estimate weights and centres of gravity
  • Select appropriate lifting accessories for different types of loads.
  • Sling various loads including balanced, unbalanced and loose.
  • Guide various loads and place accurately including to and from confined and 'blind' areas.
  • Carry out lifts according to given instructions.
  • Use different forms of communication.
  • Keep within safe working parameters.
  • Return lifting accessories to storage.
  • Recognise different types of lifting accessories and their applications

Who are the courses for?

Anyone who uses or will be slinging/signalling in the land-based industries or construction industry.

Duration/format

Novice operators – 3 days

Experienced operators – varying depending on experience

Instructor/trainee ratio

1 instructor : 4 trainees

Equipment required for course and test

  • Serviceable lifting equipment (crane) that meets current legislation, which must be hoist rope equipped, and have a varying radii and slewing facility, with a competent operator.

NB This course is also provided for the rail sector and can be carried out with a road rail vehicle.

  • A minimum of three loads of known weights which must be:
    • Load A = 1 x balanced load
    • Load B = 1 x unbalanced load
    • Load C = 1 x bundled load of minimum 4 metres length, being lengths of rod, tubing or similar
  • Serviceable certificated lifting accessories for the loads
  • An area with facilities/obstruction to enable load to be placed out of sight of lifting equipment (crane) operator for blind lifting.
  • Operator instruction book for all machinery and attachments
  • First Aid equipment
  • Fire extinguisher

 

Trainee

  • Operator instruction book for all machinery and attachments
  • High visibility clothing
  • Tagline
  • PPE (eye, head, foot and hand protection)
  • Notebook and pencil

Venue

  • Dry clean building with room to conduct theory session
  • Light and heating if necessary
  • Seating and tables for trainees
  • Suitable area of land to operate (see above)
