Ride-on Rollers |

Course objectives |
- Identify the basic construction, purpose and function of components,
and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges.
- Identify and comply with manufacturers instructions in accordance with
the operator’s handbook, other information sources and applicable
legislation.
- Carry out all pre-use and running checks.
- Set the roller for site travel.
- Travel over differing types of terrain, including undulating ground.
- Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction.
- Set the roller for compaction duties
- Prepare an area prior to compacting, i.e. traffic/personnel management
etc.
- Compact materials to given instructions.
- Compact up to supported and unsupported edges.
- Compact against radii.
- Compact around obstructions.
- Place the roller in an out-of-service condition.
- Recognise compacted and non-compacted areas.
- State conditions that may cause instability of the roller.
- State safety procedures when working up to unsupported edges.
- Explain safety procedures when compacting on inclines.
- Explain the loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter.

Anyone who uses or will be using a ride-on roller in the
land-based industries or construction industry. |

Equipment for land-based course and test
|
- Ride-on roller complying with all safety regulations
- Suitable safe area of land, minimum area quarter hectare (half an
acre), enough for trainees to operate the machine over a number of days,
suitable to have tarmac or other type 1 material which can be compacted.
Written permission from the employer/landowner must be provided stating
that the training area is able to be used for the purposes intended and is
free from all underground services.
- An area laid as per plan (attached)
- Suitable vehicle for transportation
- Operator instruction book for all machinery and attachments
- Tyre pressure gauge and pump
- First Aid equipment complying with the Health and Safety (First Aid)
