Scissor, Boom (self-propelled), Boom (vehicle mounted)

Course objectives

  • Identify the basic construction and components, and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges.
  • Identify and comply with manufacturers instructions in accordance with the operator’s handbook, other information sources i.e. duties charts, and applicable legislation.
  • Explain all relevant documentation.
  • Explain all displayed information on the machine.
  • Carry out pre-start and running checks.
  • Carry out emergency lowering procedures.
  • Operate controls from ground level, and from within the working platform.
  • Manoeuvre/travel the MEWP involving tight turns and limited access, using both forward and reverse motions.
  • Travel the MEWP with the platform in a raised position (self-propelled only)
  • Position the platform up to maximum working height.
  • Keep within safe working parameters.
  • Place the machine in an out-of-service condition.
  • Explain the loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter.

Who are the courses for?

Anyone who uses or will be using a mobile elevated work platform (scissor or boom – vehicle mounted or self-propelled) in the land-based industries or construction industry.

Duration/format

Novice operators – all types - 2 days

Experienced operators – all types – 1 day

Instructor/machine/ trainee ratio

1 instructor : 2 machines : 4 trainees or

1 instructor : 1 machine : 2 trainees

Equipment for land-based course and test

  • Scissor or boom (self-propelled or vehicle mounted) MEWP complying with safety regulations and in a well-maintained state
  • Safety harness
  • Suitable site for operating an access platform with safe areas near or inside buildings (area with obstructions to reach over and a target point at height up to 75% of the machine’s overall capability)
  • Barriers/barrier tapes, signs etc
  • Operator instruction book for all machinery and attachments
  • First Aid equipment complying with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Reg 1981
  • Fire extinguisher

Trainee

  • Operator instruction book for all machinery and attachments
  • Overalls and wet weather clothing
  • High visibility jacket
  • PPE (minimum hard hat, safety harness and lanyard but may require fall arrest device with lanyard and carabiners etc)
  • Notebook and pencil

Venue

  • Light and heating if necessary
  • Seating and tables for trainees
  • Suitable area for training (see above)
