Lorry Loader       Hook; Clamshell Bucket or Hydraulic Grab

Course objectives

  • Identify the basic construction, purpose and function of components, and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges.
  • Identify and comply with manufacturers instructions in accordance with the operators handbook, other information sources i.e. duties charts, and applicable legislation.
  • Carry out all pre-use and running checks of the carrier vehicle, lifting appliance and relevant attachments
  • Explain the Safe Working Loads and Duties Chart for the loader.
  • Configure the lorry loader and carrier vehicle for site and road travel.
  • Manoeuvre the carrier vehicle into position in order to carry out the lifting of various loads.
  • Set up carrier vehicle to carry out lifts from minimum to maximum radius.
  • Use the correct attachment for the lifting of various loads.
  • Lift and place loads at varying radii.
  • Load a vehicle in accordance with industry practices.
  • Secure various loads on the vehicle bed in accordance with industry practices.
  • Keep within safe working parameters.
  • Place the loader and carrier vehicle in an out-of-service condition.

Who are the courses for?

Anyone who uses or will be using a lorry loader (with a hook, clamshell bucket or hydraulic clamp) in the land-based industries or construction industry.

Duration/format

Novice operators – all types - 3 days

Experienced operators – varying depending on experience

Instructor/machine/ trainee ratio

1 instructor : 2 machines : 4 trainees or

1 instructor : 1 machine : 2 trainees

Equipment for land-based course and test

  • Lorry loader, complying with safety regulations and in a well-maintained state. This course can be adapted for other small hydraulic cranes such as sea cranes or pier cranes.
  • Suitable lifting attachments – clamshell bucket, hydraulic clamp or hook – all correctly certificated.
  • Suitable loads to include a load of 75%+ of the SWL of the machine, a non-symmetrical load, a load of 75%+ of the capacity of the machine at maximum horizontal reach
  • Suitable site
  • Barriers/barrier tapes, signs etc
  • A measuring tape of sufficient length, able to measure the maximum radius of the loader
  • Operator instruction book for all machinery and attachments
  • First Aid equipment complying with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Reg 1981
  • Fire extinguisher

Trainee

  • Operator instruction book for all machinery and attachments
  • Overalls and wet weather clothing
  • High visibility jacket
  • PPE (eye, head, foot and hand protection)
  • Notebook and pencil

Venue

  • Dry clean building with room for all machinery to be worked on
  • Light and heating if necessary
  • Seating and tables for trainees
  • Suitable area of land to operate (see above)
