Course objectives |
- Identify the basic construction and components, and the purpose and
use of all controls and gauges.
- Identify and comply with manufacturers instructions in accordance with
the operator’s handbook, other information sources and applicable
legislation.
- Carry out all pre-use and running checks.
- Set the dump truck for site and road travel.
- Travel the over differing types of terrain, including rough undulating
ground, in a loaded and unloaded state.
- Travel up and down substantial inclines in a loaded and unloaded
state.
- Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction, in a
loaded and unloaded state.
- Position the dump truck to receive loads
- Comply with loading procedures.
- Ensure load integrity and security.
- Discharge loads into trenches and over edges.
- Place the dump truck in an out-of-service condition.
- Explain the loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter.

Who are the courses for? |
Anyone who uses or will be using a dump truck with an
articulated chassis (below or above 15 tonnes) or a rigid chassis wheeled
(up to 15 tonnes; 15 to 50 tonnes; over 50 tonnes) or rigid chassis tracked
in the land-based industries or construction industry. |

Equipment for land-based
course and test
|
- Rear tip dumper (dump truck) (articulated
chassis or rigid chassis – tracked or wheeled) of the correct weight
category complying with all safety regulations
- Suitable safe area of land, minimum area half
hectare (1 acre), to include a haul route and inclines of 25% (1:5:5)
enough for trainees to operate the machine over a number of days, free
from overhead obstructions, at least 20 metres from overhead power lines.
Written permission from the employer/landowner must be provided stating
that the training area is able to be used for the purposes intended and is
free from all underground services.
- Supplementary vehicle for loading eg 180 or 360
excavator
- Suitable loads for dump truck eg sand, gravel,
earth, rocks
- High visibility markers, drums etc to create a
driving course
- Guidance poles for trench cutting
- Barriers/barrier tapes, signs etc
- Suitable low loader for transport
- Operator instruction book for all machinery and
attachments
- Tyre pressure gauge and pump
- First Aid equipment complying with the Health
and Safety (First Aid) Reg 1981
- Fire extinguisher
