Course Objectives To enable course members to:
bullet understand the nature of the hazards and identify the causes
bullet identify and understand requirements and responsibilities under the current legislation and where to get extra guidance
bullet understand the characteristics of abrasive wheels and their action
bullet understand and interpret the marking system of abrasive wheels
bullet recognise the need for careful handling of abrasive wheels and carry out visual check and ring tests
bullet understand and identify what speeds should be adhered to in wheel selection
bullet identify main components and understand their functions
bullet mount an abrasive wheel
bullet understand the difference between truing and dressing a wheel, undertake dressing a wheel and identify dressers
bullet adjust work rests correctly
bullet use operating precautions and be aware of avoiding hazardous conditions
bullet demonstrate their knowledge on abrasive wheels
Who is the Course For?
  • Managers, fitters, foremen and workers who are required to use abrasive wheels or supervise the use of abrasive wheels.
Duration/Format
  • One day for experienced operators
  • 2 days for novices
Instructor/Trainee Ratio Max: 1:6 Min: 1:2

  • Legislative responsibilities
  • Abrasive wheel characteristics and cutting action
  • Abrasive wheel composition and marking system
  • Inspection, handling, storage and transport
  • Wheel and spindle speed
  • Abrasive wheel mounting components
  • Mounting an abrasive wheel
  • Dressing the wheel
  • Adjustment of work rests
  • Operating precautions
  • Test your knowledge
 
Facilities/Equipment required: Venue
  • Warm, well lit room with adequate tables and chairs in open U, lighting and power points. Washroom and toilet facilities.
  • Workshop near the training room for the practical sessions
  • Selection of abrasive wheels, grinders

Trainee

  • Pens and notebooks
  • Boilersuit/Suitable protective workshop clothing
  • Eye protection (BS2092 or CE EN166)
